Overflowing Pool Triggers Hollywood Hills Slope Collapse and Evacuations

LOS ANGELES, CA — An overflowing swimming pool triggered a partial hillside collapse in the Hollywood Hills on Friday, leading authorities to evacuate several apartment units while firefighters and city officials evaluated the stability of the slope.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the area of North Wilcox Avenue after receiving reports of flooding and a hillside collapse.

Authorities determined that water from a swimming pool above the hillside had been overflowing for an unknown amount of time. The continuing flow of water saturated the surrounding area and contributed to the partial collapse.

Eight apartment units located above the affected hillside on Grace Avenue were evacuated as a precaution while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Firefighters drained the swimming pool and monitored the hillside to determine whether additional movement was likely.

By shortly after 5 p.m., fire officials said the hillside appeared to be stable and residents who had been evacuated were allowed to return to their homes.

No injuries were reported.

The incident also caused damage near the base of the hillside. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety red tagged the swimming pool as well as portions of a damaged structure located below the slope.

The response brought together multiple Los Angeles agencies, including the Fire Department, Police Department, Department of Transportation, and building officials.

The unusual incident serves as a reminder of how quickly water can affect hillside properties in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles. Saturated soil can become significantly heavier and less stable, particularly on steep terrain where homes, retaining walls, pools, and other structures may sit at different elevations.

Hollywood Hills properties are known for dramatic views and hillside architecture, but the terrain can also present unique challenges for homeowners and emergency crews when flooding, soil movement, or structural damage occurs.

In this case, authorities were able to stabilize the situation without any reported injuries.

Officials have not announced additional evacuations connected to the incident.

The partial collapse occurred on Friday, September 18, and remained among the notable local incidents being reported across Southern California heading into the weekend.

For residents in hillside communities, officials regularly encourage attention to drainage, water leaks, retaining structures, and unexpected changes in surrounding soil, particularly when large amounts of water are involved.

What began as an overflowing pool ultimately required a multiagency emergency response and temporary evacuations, illustrating how an everyday household problem can quickly become a larger safety concern when it occurs on Southern California’s steep hillsides.
